Prolonged Exposure (PE)
Prolonged exposure therapy (PE) is a behavioral treatment to reduce the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anger, guilt, and general anxiety. Therapy consists of imaginal exposure, in-vivo exposure, and psychoeducation. Imaginal exposure consists of repeated recounting of the traumatic memory (revisiting of the traumatic memories). In-vivo exposure consists of implementing a gradual approach to trauma reminders that cause distress and are avoided despite the lack of danger. Psychoeducation would assist with the client gaining insight into common reactions to trauma and the causes of chronic post-trauma difficulties.
